The tolls cost approx £40 each way. You MUST take chains up into the mountains, and these can be purchased at any of the service stations or even supermarkets from Lyon onwards at a reasonable cost. They are often better quality than the equivalent UK bought chains.
FLYING
LYON, GENEVA and GRENOBLE are all good destinations for an easy transfer to Tignes. Whilst Lyon and Geneva both have ski buses that go to Tignes I am not sure about Grenoble as this is a recent destination for the budget airlines. Car hire is available at all 3 airports and can be pre-booked when you book your flights. You would also need to arrange parking in Tignes for the vehicle. ( see my page on Car Parking). There are links to airlines on our links page.
And finally…….just to make sure that no-one else arrives after a horrendous journey, when you come from Geneva airport the route does NOT go through the Mont Blanc Tunnel as computer route finders are telling people!! The computer doesn't realise that there is a lot of snow on the pass 'Le Petit St Bernard' and that the pass is closed from Nov to June. The route in is through Albertville, Moutiers, Bourg St Maurice then up to Tignes.
SKI TRAIN
EUROSTAR runs the Skitrain which takes you to Bourg St Maurice either overnight on a Friday arriving about 6 am, or during the day on a Saturday arriving later afternoon on the Saturday. Departing trains go on Saturday evening thus getting another days skiing time on the slopes. Local buses take you to Tignes direct from the station. There is a link to this on our links page.
